My name is coach Susan. I am a professional performance coach and the founder of Jumpstart Performance Coaching.
I specialize in working with male and female athletes who want to improve their performance by implementing mental skills, strategies, tools, and habits.
The current research in the psychology of performance proves that mental preparation and performance determines 80% or more of how well an athlete executes when it matters most. My personal experience as an athlete and professional performance coach reinforces my belief that mental training and development is vastly undervalued in the development of an athlete. While physical preparation is certainly important, most athletes and coaches focus disproportionately on the physical aspects of performance and do not address the mental skills and strategies that pave the way for excellence in the realm of sport and beyond.
Playing hockey at prep-school, then NCAA D-1/Ivy League at Princeton University, and finally in the National Women’s Hockey League, taught me about the extraordinary pressures and challenges of performing at the top levels of hockey. I intimately understand what is required of an athlete to achieve success and consistently maintain it.
After retiring from professional women’s hockey, I got involved in the grassroots of hockey development as a coach and team advisor. I immediately recognized a blind spot in the way we were developing our young athletes. We were failing to train the mental side of performance. This blind spot in the development of athletes was an area I wanted to change and knew I was uniquely positioned to do so.
I began my professional training as a mental performance specialist as an undergraduate at Princeton University where I studied sociology and psychology, with a focus on human behaviour and the effects performance has on personal and professional levels of success. I continued my research and study in this area in my post-graduate work while simultaneously playing in the National Women’s Hockey League for the Toronto Aeros. During that intensive time of athletic play, study, and practical research, I was a part of a national championship winning team and worked towards four post-graduate degrees and certifications in my field of study. I earned my Professional Coaching (CLC), Group/Team Coaching (CLSC) and both my Practitioners and Masters in Neuro-Lingusitic Programming (NLPP/MNLP). None of this was possible without my growing understanding of mental performance as it related my own athletic and professional goals.
Today I am on a mission to pay it forward. I attribute all of my success to having received the best training from the world’s greatest teachers, coaches and mentors. Based on this training, I have cultivated a one-of-a-kind, scientifically based coaching program specially designed for enhancing an athlete’s performance through the development and implementation of key mental performance-enhancing skills, strategies, tools and habits.
Jumpstart Performance Coaching is the manifestation of my ongoing passion for this work and it enables me to help athletes transform their dreams into reality by harnessing the power of the mind. In my opinion, there is little that cannot be achieved, when people tap into the resources and power of their own mind.
I know that learning to access this power changed the trajectory of my life and I hope that after reading this you begin to see how it can change yours.
